Living Room from the Francis W. Little House: Windows and paneling
The Frank Lloyd Wright Room was first the living room of Francis W. Little's vacation home in Wayzata, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. It was created and constructed between 1912 and 1914. Wright's design was one of the important contribution of modern design and architecture back in the past. Wrights has used a lot of clean lines of his furnitures and architecture within his space which gives an old fashioned view. However, the most thing that inspired me from Frank design is the concept of the interior is spatial continuity, and visually connected to the forested area with a view of lake through low overhanging roofs and geometric window decorated with decorative plant patterns. "geometric window "grilles" with stylised plant motifs once linked the interior visually and spatially to the wooded site overlooking Lake Minnetonka" (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2020) which I am trying to incorporate in my interior space of interacting the outside with the inside to make my design more interesting by using nature. The living room is not just one confined volume, but rather an arrangement of horizontal levels encircled by glass that allows natural light to interact with the earthy, rich colours that Wright used all throughout the space. this is also what I have inspired from Wrights design is how he bring natural light into the living room in a way that makes the design more beautiful " It was also designed so that light flooded in from both sides, giving views of lake and landscape through a series of leaded glass windows" (ArtDeco.org, n.d.).

Furthermore, The room is a soft, warm yellow and the furniture Wrights used the outside reddish brown brown bricks for the fireplace, and he used ocher plaster for the walls, natural oak trim and flooring, and leaded windows with an electroplated copper as well as decorative ceiling strips finish all contribute to the room's harmonic harmony " decorative detail contributes to the overall visual harmony of the space." (Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, n.d.). Wright handcrafted every element of the space, even the dried leaf arrangements, which have all been replicated, as was his will not. A large, solid, lengthy study table or an ingenious wood print table are important pieces of furniture. The chairs have characteristics of the "Mission Style," but Wright gave them arms that are wide enough to comfortably lay books and snacks on. A settee's back is surrounded by even wider arms that serve as a magazine and book rack (ArtDeco.org, n.d.) "Many of the accessories are similar to those original to the room, and others recall objects that appear in period photographs. The use of Japanese prints and natural flower arrangements are characteristic Wright touches" (Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, n.d.). Overall, I love how spacious and bright the room is with those big windows which makes it warm and inviting atmosphere. The large tables adds a practical touch and provides a great space. However, this room inspired me to embrace the beauty of natural light and and how to use the idea of spatial continuity to create welcoming, calm, and comfortable space.Living Room from the Francis W. Well done. Your research is thorough and relevant. Next, you need to look at at further artists and designers who inspire you. Try to find designers and artists who work with colour.
ReplyDeletePlease look at the spatial design in this room a little more closely and how the space has been planned - look at zoning - this will assist you with your own design
