Materials and sustainability research

In this post I will make a research about the materials which will assist me, and consider which one I will be using for my project. the materials that will be included are natural materials such as, wood, textile, metal.

However, I will start with wood work materials, there are 3 main types of wood which are, Hardwood, Softwood, and Engineered wood.  The wood and the timber that are taken from the trees are known as Softwood, conifer trees which means any trees that have needles and cones are also known as softwood (Fowler, 2022).  Softwood is well known for its resilience and strength. and it has a wide range of uses, and is beautiful to look at. it used for both interior and exterior project, including flooring, cabins, and furniture to decking, landscaping. they also develop quicker, which means it reduced prices, compared to most hardwood, its less thick, lighter in weight, and flexible. softwood are often used to make window, framework, sheet product, interior mouldings including plywood and fiber wood. (www.laver.co.uk, 2022).  "Softwoods have a wide range of applications and are found in building components (e.g., windows, doors), furniture, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), paper, Christmas trees, and much more." (Diffen, 2018).

Hardwood: is considered as the most adaptable material available, having a variety uses in flooring, constructuction, musical instruments and boatbuilding and much more. hardwood is very beautiful materials that comes with more than one species, specs, and colours. Because of their condensed and more complex structure than softwood , and generally give a greater level of strength because of their slower growth time and durability  (www.laver.co.uk, 2022).  the hardwood species most frequently found with Oak, Teak, meranti, iroko, sapele, teak, walnut, balsa. which are all types of hardwood. hardwood are more likely to be used in  high quality furniture or constructions that need to last  "hardwoods will last longer than softwoods. For this reason, hardwoods are more likely to be found in high-quality furniture, decks, flooring, and construction that needs to last." (Diffen, 2018).

Engineered wood: engineered wood is the same as hardwood and softwood but they are mixed with some materials like glue to create engineered wood board. engineered wood is used variety of applications, from commercial building to home construction to industrial products “Engineered lumber is lumber that although it comes from wood, it’s been processed to be something slightly different and perform in a different, oftentimes better way than what just the raw wood would perform.” -Professional builder Jordan Smith" (Copeland, 2020). Furthermore engineered wood is sustainable material because it allows you to get the same strength and density of a old growth timber. (Copeland, 2020).

Tiles:

There are different type of Tiles such as wood tiles, ceramic tiles, and marble tiles. To start, wood floor tiles is a type of a tile that look like wood (wood-look graphics). wood tiles comes in different types of patterns and available in different sizes. wood tiles is known as environment- friendly. wood floor tiles are less costly than regular wood floors, and it is the easiest and most long- lasting options out there and it is locally sourced from jordan. furthermore, temperature won't  affect the colour of wooden floor tiles since they are weather resistant (Ceramic, n.d.).

wood tiles is One of the most significant advantages of timber appearance is that they are created from a sustainable material. wood-look tiles are made up of ceramic and porcelain, these materials have many use and easy to manufacture, making them less harmful to the environment than wood (Shubham, 2023). In addition, wood-look tiles help minimize deforestation and it last for long (Shubham, 2023).

Ceramic Tiles: are thin pieces made of clay, silica, dyes,  and other raw materials to make walls floors tiles. Stoneware and porcelain are the most well known ceramic tiles, the difference between these varieties are their hardness or the ability to the tile to absorb water "The main difference between these types is their porosity"(Emily, 2023).  and because of this, each of these types of ceramic tiles will be used for facade coverings, and both outdoor and indoor flooring (Emily, 2023).

After looking as some materials I decided to choose the wooden tiles for the floor because it is cheaper and more affordable that using natural wood. wooden tile floor are great choice  because it combine the beauty of wood. they can give any space a warm and natural feel and still being practical. More, their is a variety of styles. Also wooden tiles is a sustainable material. Also i may use ceramic only for the kitchen because it is easier to clean and affordable price. For the furniture and decor I will mix metal and wood decorative pieces, textile, and other materials

As Al-Bahr will include a blue paint over the recycled wood walls. It will be low-VOC paint as its suitable paint and still look nice, low-VOC is becoming more popular since they produce less fumes and are less harmful than regular paint (PETERJOHN INTERIORS , 2023). Furthermore, low-VOC paints are also better for our health since they release less chemicals into the atmosphere (PETERJOHN INTERIORS , 2023).

The wool fabric is one of the most sustainable material, Since they are produced from plants and insects andare manufactured using low-impact processes (Gen, 2021). Furthermore, wool is naturally fire retardant fabrics so chemicals are necessarily during the manufacturing processes and it is completely natural (Gen, 2021) all my materials are locally sourced from jordan which makes it easy to get them and more sustainable.

  1. Good that you have looked at materials and the cost of the materials - do you know where you can source these? Are they local and sustainable for your project
