Al-Jawad Pike: Research

I am going to begin my research with Al-Jawad Pike that had designed Athletic Propulsion Lab ( APL) in New York City that has been brought to life with a shoe store design that we cannot see like it everywhere filled with APL own brand shoe and dessert look "We really focused on creating something that you couldn’t find anywhere else,” (Nast, 2023)As I am going to have a shoe section in my project by being able to give it a interesting look, in the same time Al-Jawad Pike had designed a really interesting shoe store that inspired to look at it more further.

            APL

Inspired by a minimalist New York City flagship, Al-Jawad Pike created the Athletic Propulsion Lab ( APL), an athletic shoe store. The interior of the store is rounded with high celling, and columns covered in hand painted plaster which are visible from the windows that are facing the street which provide a  the impression of elegance (Pau, 2024). The shoe store covers 3,800 square foot and features an amphitheatre and basketball courts symbolised by a stadium-style bench that wraps around a column "We started with basketball and performance, so that was a really important touch to us when we were designing the space,” (Nast, 2023) was designed by architects drawing inspiration from the APL. (Pau, 2024). They used marbles for the floors and sandstone for the walls that gives this elegance look and works will with the curved seating.

The architects chose to do the floor plan open layout "architects kept the majority of the floorplan open" "allow customers to leisurely meander and discover what’s around the bend."(Pau, 2024) with the exception of three teardrop shaped columns and irregular shaped plinths that allows customers walk slowly and discover whats around the corner.  Also, the sandstone walls and travertino romano flooring, which match each other, provide a sculpture like focal point in the rooms minimalist design. for the shoe in order to display them like though in a gallery they are mounted on the walls using grid like boxes which the shoe can be placed inside the box (Pau, 2024).

The store was thought out from the smallest details, from colour to the way it was arranged, to the way it was displayed,  Al jawad Pike uses a wide range of materials from sandstone, oynx, ceramic, etc, to active  this result, which gives this combination that attract attention and gives a luxurious appearance, although its prices are not expensive. the thing that gave me inspiration was the method that Al-Jawad Pike used to display the product in a boxes with using lights, knowing that Al-Jawad Pike was clever in the way of using light on both sides, the light inside the boxes and the light for the entire store, Furthermore, the open plan floor layout which will help in my own project. After this research I got more ideas for my project that may be useful, and these ideas is to use a type of a ceramic to my walls, and the way that I am going to showcase the products which will be easy for the customer to navigate and see, using built in lights to give the look of elegance, with the minimalist style clean look. Which I learned from this research will be really useful for me on my AP2 project.
