Reflection - Term III

This term, Art Portfolio 2 was much more interesting than AP1 because we had two work in collaboration with classmates, and we got to work according to a brief given to us by our tutors, which gave me an idea about how my work could be in my future studies and even in my future work. The brief for this term was to rebuild a city called Cromwell, which made me step out of my comfort zone and work with materials and interior styles that I do not prefer or I am not used to. However, I had to decide between 3 options about what to design, and I chose to design a retail shop, which was the first time for me, to widen my knowledge in more than one aspect, and I learned more about how to think as an interior designer. This term was more self directed than term 2, and this taught me how to have a visionary of what might happen regarding the situation or any decision I might take as an interior designer. In addition, this term I chose to make my 3D design digitally where I improved my digital skills further.

Moreover, this term, I have improved my digital skills a lot in digital softwares I didn't use before, like Procreate and Cohoom, these two software were challenging to learn but with practice now I can use them easily. Using procreate I learned how to draw 2 point perspectives digitally, and rendering digitally is much easier than drawing manually. However, in term 3, I improved my 2D drawing more than in term 2, in which term 2, 2D drawing was a big problem for me, my practising during the break had improved my drawing to a next level. Furthermore, the lessons on experimenting this term again were really helpful and helped to consider the aspects you need to use or put in your design. It also helped me to correct some mistakes I might have made in my 2D drawings if I hadn't experimented with drawing the marble material. Last term developing ideas was the hardest thing that i've faced and I was looking to improve it this term and I did. In term 3 I improved my skills in developing ideas further.

Working collaboratively this term was exciting and developed my teamwork skills to a better level. Usually, I prefer to work alone, but I have found out that working collaboratively with classmates helps develop thinking as a designer and also helps to develop ideas from a very simple concept to a more meaningful idea. This term, I worked with Narmina to create 3-floor plans with each other's help, regardless of how long it took to finish the floor plans we were able to complete them professionally. I also got to work with Marvin and Mohammad. The design of Mohammad and Marvin had to match my design, and at some point I had to change some of my design ideas to make it look good with what Mohammad and Marvin were doing. However, working with Narmina, Marvin, and Mohammad helped me develop the skills I mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph and helped me step out of my comfort zone and use many colours in my design, which is not my style. Furthermore, I was able to finish my entire interior design on time, even well before the deadline.

This term has taught me that I can step out of my comfort zone and learn new skills. Also, in this term, I improved all the skills I wanted to improve since term 1, from drawing to space planning, developing ideas, to a professional design portfolio. To do that, I had to manage my time well, which made me focus more on my responsibilities.

To sum up, this module and my tutors are the main reasons for my remarkable development, which has made me much better than I was, and what I learned definitely will benefit me greatly when I go to university.
